Harrison Phinney Charon’s dinghy sits abandoned, clanging against the dock, like chimes in the darkness, not unlike the bells of a distant memory.

The memory stirs, becomes overwhelming, overpowering, disorienting.

You wander off, away from the river’s edge. Only then do you notice the stridence in the air, the suspended echoes of a host of souls.

Eventually, the two sounds become one, as you wonder where the ferryman has gone.

With a mesmerizing grasp of rhythmic delicacy and skin-shivering microtonal tunings, ‘Burnish’ makes for a memorable introduction, where needed, to the remarkably attuned intuitions of Tongue Depressor. Recording and performing together since 2017, with some 20 tape and LP releases to their name, the New Haven, Connecticut pairing are one-take artists whose familiarity with each other’s style results in such a closely shared musical system or language that it effectively blurs distinctions between improvisation and composition. On ‘Burnish’ they explore aspects of a chiming sublime and its phantasmic, doomier inverse with utterly compelling results.
